What are veneers?
Veneers are durable coverings that are adhered to the fronts of your teeth using a special adhesive. They can be used to address many cosmetic defects, including gaps between teeth, teeth that look too small, cracks, chips, pits and deep discoloration. They can also be used to help teeth appear straighter. Veneers can be custom tinted to match your teeth so they blend in perfectly.
How are veneers applied?
Veneers take two visits. At the first office visit, the tooth surface is prepared for the veneer and a small portion of tooth material is removed to make room for the veneer material. A temporary veneer will be applied to protect the tooth. At the second visit, the temporary veneer will be removed and the surface will be cleaned before the veneer is applied with a very strong adhesive.
Are veneers difficult to take care of? Do they stain easily?
Veneers are very easy to take care of – they simply need to be brushed like your natural teeth, and routine dental visits will ensure they’re properly adhered and not coming loose. To keep them in good shape and looking their best, try to avoid biting hard candy or ice which can cause veneers as well as natural teeth to become chipped. Veneers are very resistant to stains, but like your own natural teeth, smoking and routine consumption of coffee or red wine may cause staining over time, so you might want to rinse your mouth after these beverages to keep veneers looking their whitest.
How long will my veneers last?
With proper care, your veneers can last 10 years or longer. Be sure to see the dentist regularly to check for any issues that need to be corrected to ensure your veneers last as long as possible.
